Suspending the Grid
The museum, sat on the forgotten quayside of Berwick, attempts to breathe new life into the struggling town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The concept was two over-lapping grids; the first with a North-South axis for environmental purposes, the second attempts to exploit the incredible views surrounding the site.
The main principle was a modular construction, with a view for extension and addition as the museum grew. The building could grow into the grid whilst maintaining its environmental credentials. Pods are suspended in space around a chronologically organised walkway, which house important artifacts from Berwick’s turbulent past. The museum is a journey, constantly questioning the identity of this border town and celebrating its resilience.
